![]() As a young man, he had seen the 1983 American Sci-fi film WarGames about a young boy named David Lightman (Matthew Broderick) who inadvertently hacks into the mainframe of the Defense Department’s computers and sets off a chain of events that nearly lead the world to WWIII. Hosoda had long been fascinated by Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, and online life-copying games like Second Life. This time, Hosoda was given more creative freedom and allowed to do more than adapt a previously existing work, and instead develop his own script alongside Madhouse screenwriter Satoko Okudera (who also worked on the script for his previous film). Finding and helping the real "Beast" is the only way to prevent The Beast from being totally exterminated from "U", and also free Suzu from her trauma at the same time.(Read my previous Hosoda film review here: The Girl Who Leapt Through Time)Īfter the critical and commercial success of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, spurred on by a grassroots, word of mouth, cult admiration for the film, Studio Madhouse producer Yuichiro Saito (who produced Hosoda’s first feature as well) decided to find financing for a second Hosoda work. While in the real world, Suzu and her friends try to find the location of the user who controls The Beast based on what little footage they see during the brief stream. On the other hand, there is another user in "U" known simply as "The Beast", who is infamous for fighting against anyone who dares to stand in his way. There, she is a diva with a mesmerizing voice called "Belle" that can attract the attention of every user on the platform. What most people don't know is the fact that Suzu is active in a virtual world called "U". She used to love singing together with her mother, but now she can't even sing in front of other people. Suzu saw her mother drown when she was a child and that scarred her mind for life. It is a story of a shy and awkward girl named Suzu as she tries to go through her mundane high school life. So now, Kenji has become the prime suspect in the whole chaos.īelle, on the other hand, is a reimagining of the iconic beauty and the beast story. Apparently, OZ's supposedly unbreakable security is accidentally cracked by Kenji who thinks he simply works on a brain teaser. Summer Wars tells the story of Kenji, a boy who is proficient in math, and Natsuki, a girl who drags him to meet her big family as her fake boyfriend.Īs the family deals with all sorts of problems leading up to the 90th birthday of Natsuki's grandma, the virtual world called OZ is under attack by a rogue A.I. ![]() Before we talk about how it happened, let's talk about what are the stories of these two movies first.
